Inca din vremea Renasterii, calatorii, artistii, scriitorii, pictorii si muzicienii au fost fascinati de meleagurile misterioase ale Orientului. Descoperierea unui univers plin de farmec si poezie, arhitectura, stil, traditii antice, arta culinara si vestimentara, frumusete, vegetatie exotica, lumina, culori vii, parfumuri indraznete si celelalte curiozitati culturale sta la baza marelui curent orientalist care se va afirma la finele secolului XIX in Franta si in Europa. Aceasta viziune romantica a unui Orient sublim a stat la baza a numeroase creatii picturale, literare si muzicale.
Fascinatia pentru Orient a servit ca baza de inspiratie pentru picturile lui Ingres, Delacroix si Dinet. A inspirat Calatoria in Orient a lui Lamartine, Orientalii lui Victor Hugo, Scene din viata orientala de Gerard de Nerval, jurnalelor de calatorie ale lui Teophile Gauthier si lui Pierre Loti in Azizade. Creatia simfonica Sherezade a lui Rimski-Korsakov confirma si ea aceasta aplecare spre un taram oniric, al voluptatii si exotismului.
