Una din cele mai fascinante civilizaţii antice este cu siguranţă cea a celţilor. Deşi nu se cunosc foarte multe despre aceştia, legende şi poveşti suprarealiste însoţesc această civilizaţie, inspirând chiar regizorii de filme. Cât este adevăr şi cât este fabulaţie din ce se ştie despre celţi?
Celţii erau avansaţi într-ale ştiinţelor economice şi exacte. Se pare că foloseau calendare foarte bine pune la punct. Dacă o zi era considerată „nefastă”, celţii puteau chiar să modifice calendarul astfel încât o sărbătoare să nu nimerească într-o astfel de zi. Pădurea – „biserica” celţilor – pădurea era atât de intim inserată în cultura celţilor. Distrugerea unui sanctuar forestier al celţilor era la fel de important precum masacrarea trupelor lor pe câmpurile de luptă. Celţii preferau proprietatea colectivă: fiecare trib poseda bunuri care erau la dispoziţia tuturor. Aceasta formă de organizare a rezistat până în secolul al XIV-lea. Celţii nu luau nicio decizie importantă fără a-şi consulta vizionarii. Educaţia băieţilor celţi presupunea învăţarea unor sporturi, iar a fetelor – noţiuni de croitorie. Copiii erau daţi unui „părinte spiritual”, care avea sarcina de a-I învăţa. Băieţii rămâneau la acest părinte spiritual până la vârsta de 16 ani, iar fetele până la 14 ani. După această perioadă, fetele şi băieţii se întorceau în familiile de origine, însă nu uitau niciodată de părintele spiritual, pe care aveau datoria de a-l ajuta la nevoie. Celţii ştiau să calculeze foarte bine distanţe şi suprafeţe. Se pare că erau mult mai pricepuţi ca alte civilizaţii considerate mai avansate. Exilul pentru celţi era considerată o pedeapsă extrem de gravă, semănând cu o „amputaţie psihică”. Celţii puneau mare preţ pe preoţi, ghicitori, astronomi, druizi şi judecători. La declanşarea semnalului de luptă, celţii se mobilizau fără ezitare la locul de adunare. Ultimul sosit era sacrificat în onoarea zeilor. În civilizaţia celtică, femeile aveau permisiunea să participe la război. Acestea sunt descrise de cronicarii vremii ca fiind îmbrăcate în negru, „ca vrăjitoarele”, cu părul în dezordine, agitând torţele.

The Celts were advanced in the economics and exact sciences. It seems they used calendars very well. If a day was considered „bad”, the Celts could even change the calendar so that a holiday would not be included in such a day. – The forest – the „church” of the Celts – the forest was so intimately embedded in the culture of the Celts. The destruction of a Celtic forest sanctuary was just as important as the massacre of their troops on the battlefields. The Celts preferred collective property: each tribe owned goods that were available to all. This form of organization survived until the fourteenth century. The Celts made no important decision without consulting their visionaries. The education of Celtic boys involved learning sports, and girls – notions of tailoring. The children were given to a „spiritual parent” who was responsible for teaching them. The boys remained with this spiritual parent until the age of 16, and the girls until the age of 14. After this period, girls and boys returned to their families of origin, but they never forgot the spiritual parent, who had a duty to help them in need. The Celts knew how to calculate distances and surfaces very well. It seems that they were much more skilled than other civilizations considered more advanced. Exile for the Celts was considered an extremely serious punishment, resembling a „psychic amputation”. The Celts put great value on priests, riddles, astronomers, druids and judges. When the battle signal was triggered, the Celts mobilized without hesitation at the meeting place. The last one arrived was sacrificed in honor of the gods. In the Celtic civilization, women were allowed to participate in the war. These are described by the chroniclers of the time as being dressed in black, „like witches,” with their hair in disarray, waving their torches.
